The Museums Association agreed a definition
for museums (to include art galleries) in 1998: 'Museums enable people to explore collections for inspiration, learning and enjoyment.
They are institutions that collect, safeguard and make accessible artefacts and specimens,
which they hold in trust for society.'
Categories are based on sub-domain breakdown used in the MLA report Overview
of Data in the Museums, Libraries and Archives Sector :
Central Government funded Museums that receive core funding from central government. Includes 'nationals' and
military museums. Local Authority Museums that receive core funding from one or more
local authorities. May be managed by the local authority, or by another organisation
on its behalf. Government Agency Museums that receive core funding from a government
agency, e.g. English Heritage. Higher Education Museums associated with the UK's universities,
university departments or other higher education institutions. Independent Museums that are managed outside the
traditional frameworks of central or local government and which are owned by charitable
trusts. Private Museums owned by a private individual or for profit company. Other Museums not included in the above categories and those which fall into more than one
of the above categories.
