Generally, the data supplied by tyre companies to car manufacturers is gathered during lab trials and does not always offer a clear indication of how a particular tyre will perform in a specific vehicle under varying climatic or driving conditions. Therefore, manufacturers need to conduct their own costly and time-consuming parameter tests.

This collaborative R&D project, awarded by the Transport iNet has enabled the Loughborough-SIMPACK team to develop several tools to support cost-effective, time-efficient and rigorous tyre testing and parameter identification – including a state-of-the-art portable outdoor tyre testing facility which can be used on-site by car manufacturers.

The test rig supplies invaluable data, some of which was only previously available via material-level lab testing – and is therefore of use to both tyre and vehicle manufacturers.

The team have also developed the associated test methods, post-processing techniques and algorithms for identifying particular tyre model parameters that vehicle companies can use in order to understand the performance of tyres in their vehicles – and improve the safety of all road users.
