Coaching Analysis Intervention System

Loughborough lead academic
Dr Chris Cushion, School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences

In the UK alone, there are currently over 1.5 million people working in coaching roles.  There are thousands of coach education programmes, but very few practical tools available to coaches to help them while they work, to analyse in detail how they work, or make a real difference to support on-going coach development.

Chris Cushion has taken 20 years of research to identify the behaviour of coaches to develop CAIS (Coach Analysis and Intervention System).  CAIS is an iPad software application that enables live and post-session coach behaviour analysis to help coaches immediately reflect on and develop their behaviour and practice.

CAIS has been developed in close partnership with a range of sports, most notably football, cricket and hockey.  The software is being used within professional football at Leicester City FC as part of coach CPD, and will become an integral part of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) Community Coach Education Pathway.

The software is also being used within UK Sport’s Inspire/Aspire coach development programme, where the next generation of coaches of high performance athletes are supported by mentors to progress onto UK Sport’s world-class coaching programmes. The software is also on trial at the University of Lincoln for its undergraduate coaching programme, Chelsea FC, Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, British Canoe Union, and the FA.

CAIS has received an extremely positive response from the coaching industry, with over 1,000 expressions of interest from sports organisations across the globe.

Stage of development

  • Loughborough has partnered sports software experts Performa Sports to launch CAIS
  • CAIS was launched in January 2013 and is available from the App Store
  • Multiple licences have been purchased by organisations including the ECB, LCFC and UK Sport
  • Discussions are underway to promote CAIS for the US sports industry, where Division 1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association represents a highly lucrative market

Support from the ECB for CAIS:

CAIS has significantly influenced our evolved approach to practice and coaching behaviour within our revamped community pathway. CAIS will become part of our Community Coach Education pathway.
