Loughborough University London scholarships awarded to East London graduates

Ten East London graduates have received full scholarships to study at Loughborough University London, which opens its doors to its first intake of students this month.

The Inspiring Success scholarships are jointly funded by Loughborough University London and the London Legacy Development Company (LLDC) and enable unemployed and under-employed graduates from the East London boroughs to study a master’s degree at one of the country’s leading universities.

The scholars were officially welcomed to Loughborough University London at a special Celebration of Collaboration and Innovative Thinking (CCIT) event at the ArcelorMittal Orbit on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park last night (16 September).

The event showcased some of the forward-thinking collaborations and innovative plans taking shape on Loughborough’s new campus, and welcomed representatives from around 50 partner organisations including Barclays, England Hockey, IBM, Speedo, Fosters + Partners and EY.

Loughborough University Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Allison said: “We are all incredibly excited about Loughborough University London and to be able to meet some of our first scholars was a real honour.  I look forward to following their Loughborough University London journey.”

Professor Mike Caine, Dean of Loughborough University London, added: “We are delighted to welcome our first cohort of scholars to our London campus and look forward to working with them to co-create an outstanding educational experience.  We aspire to equip and empower our students with the skills, networks and knowhow to embrace the challenges of an ever-changing global society.”

Paul Brickell, Executive Director of Regeneration and Partnerships for the London Legacy Development Corporation, said: “Raising aspirations and helping people to fulfil their potential is a key part of the London 2012 Games legacy and the Inspiring Success scholarships are just one way in which this is being delivered.  We are delighted that a number of local residents have secured scholarships with Loughborough University London. There is no doubt they have bright futures ahead of them.”

Gavin Poole, CEO of Here East commented: “At Here East we are delighted that Loughborough University London has awarded these prestigious scholarships to local students.  Community is central to the Here East project and we want local people to share in this project and benefit from it.  These scholarships provide a great opportunity for young people in this area to acquire the skills and knowledge that will open up an array of opportunities.”

Loughborough University London is based in Here East on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and provides postgraduate education and research opportunities with a particular focus on innovation and entrepreneurship.
