Michael Meacher MP to reveal his blueprint for Britain’s future at public lecture

Michael Meacher MP

The leading Labour politician Michael Meacher MP will be revealing his blueprint for Britain’s future at a public lecture being hosted by Loughborough University on February 12.

The lecture, organised by the University’s Department of Politics, History and International Relations, will focus on the MP’s latest book ‘The State We Need’ and be followed by a Q and A session.

Mr Meacher is the Labour MP for Oldham West and Royton. He was first elected to Parliament in 1970 and in Tony Blair’s Government served as Minister of State for the Environment and Privy Counsellor from 1997 to 2003. He was also a member of the Shadow Cabinet for 14 years.

In The State We Need’ Mr Meacher presents a different model for business, a reconstructed banking system, an alternative economic policy, a reconfigured power structure, an industrial policy geared to the revival of manufacturing, a sharply different approach to employment and welfare, as well as inequality in society, and a fundamental reassessment of the handling of climate change.

Dr David Berry, Head of the Department of Politics, History and International Relations, said: “The event marks the first in a series of public lectures being hosted by the Department around the theme of ‘Critical Politics for Global Challenges’, and we are delighted Mr Meacher has agreed to come to the University. This is a great opportunity to learn more about his radical vision for the country and engage with important debates about the future of British politics.”

The free public lecture takes place on Thursday 12 February at 6pm.  To book a place visit www.lboro.ac.uk/michael-meacher
