Loughborough academic to speak at international conference

A Loughborough University academic will be a key note speaker at an international conference focusing on the relationship between sport and national foreign policies.

Joseph Maguire, Professor of Sociology of Sport based in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, will attend the conference ‘Culture of Fairness. Sport in Foreign Policy – Opportunities and Challenges’ in Brussels.

Professor Maguire will present research findings that highlight how global sport is a feature of policies and practices on the part of nations, transnational corporations and non-governmental organisations, and an array of cultural groups in civic society.

The conference been funded by the Institute for Foreign Affairs, ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), based in Stuttgart.

As well as being a key note speaker at the conference Professor Maguire has also played a pro-active role in supporting the Institute in developing the event.

Speaking about the conference Professor Maguire said:

“Given my extensive research in the area of sport and globalisation, it was an honour to be appointed by this prestigious Institute to conceive a conference on sport and foreign policy.

“The conference aims to raise awareness of sport as part of foreign cultural policy, define the chances, limits and challenges of sport in international politics, and explore links between sport and development.

“I will be drawing on my own research on elite sport migration, the hosting of mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the impact of the London 2012 Games in the dissemination of Olympic values.

“My appointment to conceive and organise the conference reflects Loughborough University’s long standing and internationally renowned reputation in the social scientific study of sport.”

The conference will be held on 10th December 2014, in conjunction with the annual meeting of EUNIC, the European Network of National Cultural Institutes working on foreign cultural relations.
