School of the Arts trio receive Weavers awards

Nicola Adams with Justine Picardie of Harpers’ Bazaar

Three School of the Arts students at Loughborough University have been awarded scholarships by the Worshipful Company of Weavers.

Nicola Adams was awarded £3,000, while Olivia Sammons and Ruth Hepburn each received £1,000. All three are specialising in Woven Textiles on the Textile Innovation and Design course.

Nicola received her award from Ms Justine Picardie, Editor-in-Chief of Harpers’ Bazaar, at the annual Textile Awards Ceremony and Court Lunch at Saddlers’ Hall, London. Also present was Jan Shenton, the School of Arts’ Pathway Leader in Woven Textiles.

Loughborough University also received £10,294 from the Support for Education Award to buy a Swiss ARM loom, plus £1,000 towards the cost of yarn for final year students.

The aim of the Support for Education Award is to help weaving departments upgrade or renew existing equipment, purchase new equipment, or enable their students to gain experience of modern technology.

The awards are made from the Weavers’ Company’s Textile Education Fund, through which the company seeks to build on almost 900 years of involvement in the craft and manufacture of textiles.

The main aims of the Fund are to encourage excellence in all spheres of the United Kingdom woven textile industry by identifying, supporting and nurturing exceptional students training for and young talent working within the industry, supporting centres of excellence in textile education and recognising and working with those who have made the most significant contribution to the industry.

Loughborough University is one of six centres of excellence offering textile-related degree courses which receive grants from the Weavers Company.
