Why Loughborough? Its great reputation and the range of opportunities, say students

Andreas Oppong

We asked two of our students, both of whom came to the University through the Clearing process, why they chose Loughborough and how their time here has been so far.

Andreas Oppong (pictured right) is studying for a BSc (Hons) in Economics at Loughborough and found the Clearing process much easier than he expected.

“All I had to do was call the University's Clearing centre, tell them my grades and I was accepted immediately,” he says.

“I chose Loughborough because it has a great reputation for expert teaching and is amongst the top 20 universities in the UK. It’s also well known for its School of Business and Economics.

“My course is very informative and keeps me up-to-date on current affairs affecting the UK economically and how the economic theories are applied in everyday life. Loughborough has definitely opened my eyes and exposed me to what the working world has to offer. I have also been able to enhance my knowledge in the subject I am studying, due to the brilliant teaching from lecturers and tutors.”

With sport among Andreas’s favourite hobbies, attending a university with great facilities was an opportunity he couldn’t miss.

“I play for my Hall’s 'Intramural Sport' football team. Loughborough has a range of societies and clubs that you can join to make your university experience even more enjoyable. I’m also currently a member of the Finance society, the Afro-Caribbean society and the Radical Youth Christian group.

“I really enjoy the campus atmosphere and what they have to offer; there’s always something to do and people are very friendly.”

Ben Abrahams (pictured top) is studying for a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics with Economics.

He believes Maths at Loughborough offered the broadest and most supportive style of education.

“The Maths Learning Support Centre was certainly a key attraction,” Ben says, “and the fact that Loughborough had won the Times Higher Education award for the Best Student Experience six years in a row made it stand out above other universities for me.”

Ben was initially nervous that he wouldn’t receive the same treatment as those who picked Loughborough as their first choice university.

“But the opposite was in fact true,” he says. “I was overwhelmed by the amount of support I received on my first day.”

Of his course Ben says: “It’s about learning how to apply maths to real world situations.

“The lecturers always have their office doors open to questions and are very approachable. The Maths Learning Support Centre is one of the most useful resources provided by the University. It provides one-to-one assistance for any mathematics-related problems and has certainly helped me throughout my degree.”

In general, Ben says he loves being part of the Loughborough Experience.

“The atmosphere that you have on campus is second to none. The hall spirit and rivalry distinguishes Loughborough from most other universities. The vast range of opportunities to try new things is unbelievable and I have never felt excluded. I've always felt part of a large community.”
