Civil Engineering students from Loughborough University have beaten industry teams to win first place in a regional communications competition – for the second year in a row.

Organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the event was open to groups of engineering graduates or current students from across the East Midlands.  Teams were tasked with producing consultation strategies, public information leaflets and public consultation presentations for individual future engineering scenarios.  The aim of the competition is to demonstrate the importance of communication and public involvement in civil engineering projects.

Oliver Latimer, James Riches, Jagdev Sagoo, Andrew Rettie and Sam Siddorn were the winning team with their harbour and transport link scenario.  All the students are from the University’s School of Civil and Building Engineering.  They beat off stiff competition from industry teams such as Balfour Beatty to win the competition.

Professor Tony Thorpe, Dean of the School said: “We are delighted with our students’ hard work and success.  They are a credit to the School and illustrate the fantastic teaching on offer at Loughborough, which equips students with all the skills that they need for a successful career.”

The winning team now hope to compete in the national semi-finals.
