Student wins national award for internship

A Loughborough University student has been named ‘Best Intern’ at the 2013 National Placement and Internship Awards – the second year in a row the University has excelled at the awards.

Organised by RateMyPlacement, an enterprise initiative set up by Loughborough graduates in 2007, the awards aim to showcase the outstanding achievements of all stakeholders involved in undergraduate placements and internships.

Adam Allcock from the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering was nominated for his work for DoubleClick, Google.  This was in recognition of his success in identifying a need within the business, then creating, presenting and implementing a piece of forecasting software that is being applied, and used by account managers across the UK and worldwide. The new provision of data and metrics in a range of intuitive formats standardising the system for all users, is estimated to be in the millions of dollars in efficiency savings.

Adam proved that even within a short space of time a huge impact could be made within a business, and having a fresh set of ideas coming is invaluable for them.

 “From day one I was exposed to real work, and it was during this that I discovered things that could be improved,” He explains.  “I developed and presented solutions to these, which were readily accepted and implemented. It’s really impressive that such a large company as Google are able to adapt to change so nimbly.

“I've learnt how to instigate corporate change, work with upper management, negotiate departmental politics, and how to design and deliver a system from concept to implementation.

 “I definitely enjoyed the internship. A lot of people ignore the benefits of summer internships however you can make a big impact in 6-12 weeks. Working at a company as successful as Google really gives you an understanding of the types of problems big businesses face and how they overcome them.”

The awards, sponsored by PwC, were attended by over 400 representatives from both the corporate and higher education world.

In 2012 former student Lillian Hiscox won the ‘Best Placement Student’ award for her work at Microsoft.
