The world watches as the London Olympic Games officially start
28 July 2012
More than a billion people across the globe watched the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games last night, with some of Loughborough’s athletes parading through the stadium with Team GB.
The dazzling ceremony left the crowds in awe and was the perfect opener to this historic event.
With more than 70 Loughborough-linked athletes, coaches and officials taking part in the Games, this will be the University’s largest cohort at any Olympics.
Loughborough’s Director of Sport, Chris Earle said this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for those taking part. He added: “It is fantastic that Loughborough is playing such an important part in the London Olympics.
"Not only has the campus been the official home for the Team GB Preparation Camp in the run up to the Games, we also have our largest group of athletes, coaches and officials actually taking part.
“The motto of sport at Loughborough is ‘where history begins’, and this statement will be running through the minds of all those linked to the University that are taking part in this fantastic global celebration of sport.”
