Loughborough-based Sam Oldham gets Team GB call-up
5 July 2012
Loughborough- based Sam Oldham says it was a ‘shock’ to make the Team GB gymnastics squad for the London 2012 London Olympics.
Sam, 19, who is from Keyworth in Nottingham and trains at Loughborough University five days a week, was second at the British Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool, behind Daniel Purvis, who was also selected.
It proved to be expert timing and propelled him into the five, which is completed by Kristian Thomas and Max Whitlock.
"It’s pretty mental to be honest, and quite a shock as well," said Sam, who went through the kitting-out day at the Team GB Loughborough Preparation Camp on Wednesday.
"I kind of left it to the last minute as it were – the last trial and competition – but obviously I’m over the moon as I’ve been working for this for a very, very long time.
"It was amazing to find out, and a hard few days. The way we found out was by a phone call, so waiting for that phone call was pretty intense. You were on the edge of your seat."
Sam competes in the ‘all-around’ discipline which involves floor, high bar, vault, pommel horse, parallel bars and rings.
He was crowned European junior champion in 2008 and went on to win two gold medals at the European Youth Olympics and three gold medals at the 2010 European Junior Championships.
The 2011 European Championships in Berlin saw him make his senior debut and Sam put in a performance of huge quality and maturity to finish fourth.
