Houghton goal secures quarter-final spot for women’s football team
1 August 2012
Former Loughborough College student Steph Houghton scored yet again for the Great Britain women’s football team, securing a 1-0 victory over Brazil.
The match at Wembley Stadium yesterday (July 31) was played in front of 70,584 people, the biggest ever crowd for a women’s football match in the UK. Spectators described the atmosphere as ‘amazing’.
Arsenal full-back Steph, who has won 27 England caps, scored in the second minute of the match – her third goal in as many games.
The win against Brazil followed victories over New Zealand and Cameroon, securing the team a place in the quarter-finals where they will face Canada on August 3.
Steph was a member of the FA Women’s Player Development Centre which used to be based at Loughborough. Fellow members of the Team GB squad, captain Casey Stoney, Jill Scott, Karen Carney, Ellen White, Sophie Bradley and Claire Rafferty were also members of the centre.
