Dasaolu possible for 2012 Games
26 June 2012
Loughborough University-based James Dasaolu appears to have been pencilled in by Team GB for the 100 metres at the London 2012 Olympics after being omitted from the Great Britain team for the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, which start tomorrow (Wednesday June 27).
The Loughborough College graduate, who has an A standard time of 10.18 secs under his belt, finished third behind winner Dwayne Chambers at the Aviva trials in Birmingham last weekend.
Both have been left out of the 100 metres for the European Championships and Britain will be represented by Loughborough’s Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who finished seventh in the trials in 10.47 secs, and Commonwealth Games and European silver medallist Mark Lewis-Francis, who was sixth in 10.44 secs.
Harry is also in the 4x00 relay team with Chambers, Tyrone Edgar, James Ellington, Christian Malcolm, and Danny Talbot.
Lisa Dobriskey, who was second in the women's 1500m, has not travelled to Finland, suggesting she may be awarded a discretionary place in the Olympics team
Loughborough’s Nathan Woodward, Will Sharman and Meghan Beesley will all be looking to press their Olympic claims. Nathan was third in the 400m hurdles at the trials, Will was fourth in the 110m hurdles, and Meghan was third in the 400m hurdles.
Sophie Hitchon, who won the hammer with 69.79 metres and has qualified for the Olympics, is also competing in Helsinki, as well as a host of current and former Loughborough students, and athletes who train at the university.
They include Mark Dry (hammer), Chris Clark (200m), Richard Buck (4x400m), Rhys Williams (400m hurdles), Robbie Grabarz and Samson Oni (high jump), Max Eaves (pole vault), JJ Jegede (long jump), Abdul Buhari (discus), Jeanette Kwakye (100m), Nicola Sanders (400m), Isobel Pooley (high jump), Sally Peake (pole vault), Sarah Holt (hammer), Laura Whittingham (javelin), and Hayley Jones (4x100m).
