Loughborough athletes shine in the Olympic stadium
11 May 2012
Loughborough Students Athletics Club has reclaimed the title as the best University and College track and field team in the UK, thanks to some great performances in the Olympic Stadium.
The students participated in the BUCS Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships from 4-7 May that acted as the test event for the stadium and the upcoming London 2012 Games.
Psychology student Justine Kinney took the headlines on the opening day of the Championships by winning the first ever competitive race held in the stadium.
Justine was well aware of the significance of the occasion when she lined up to take part in the women's 400m hurdles. After the race she said:
"I wanted to go for it and it was so quick. The track feels amazing, like you could fly down it – it feels wonderful."
Later in the meet Justine also won the final of the 400m hurdles, one of 13 championship winning performances by the Loughborough team.
The combined efforts from the 70 strong team lead to the students winning the BUCS athletics men's, women's and overall trophies.
Loughborough Students Athletics Club men's team captain Mike Baker said:
"It truly was a great weekend for Loughborough Students' Athletics Club on the grandest of stages in the Olympic Stadium. The 24 medals, 13 of which were gold, is testament to the inspiration of our athletes to deliver performances worthy of their continued hard work in preparing for this event.”
“The set up at the Olympic Park was professional and thorough, and this subsequently made for a superb weekend of athletics despite the often inclement conditions.”
