Volunteering in 2012 and beyond
Through the Medal Makers Programme we are keen to instil a culture of volunteering in our participants, to enthuse and encourage them to take up other volunteering opportunities and continue on their volunteering journey.
The Olympic Games Medal Maker Programme is a fantastic platform for engaging and inspiring new volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life.
The lasting legacy will be a vibrant, enthusiastic and energised army of volunteers who will want to continue being involved in sport and sports volunteering.
Over the last twelve months the Medal Makers Programme at Loughborough University has endeavoured to do precisely this.
The team has been working hard to build a volunteering programme to recruit, train and deploy volunteers across the preparation camps, for Team GB and the Japanese Olympic athletes who will be coming to Loughborough University during the summer.
Post 2012 our volunteers will have acquired new skills, knowledge and experience, which they can utilise for future volunteering in the community.
They will gain valuable work experience, which will enviably boost a CV for new employment, or for further training.
But it goes further than this, by enriching volunteer’s lives and empowering them to make new choices.
Our partnership with community volunteering organisations, such as Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport, as well as our own Volunteer Academy, gives our volunteers the vehicle for continuing their volunteering activities once their time with the Medal Makers comes to an end.
A national initiative, known as Sports Makers, will enable us to achieve this goal. We will be actively encouraging all of our volunteers to make a difference in the local community by signposting you to Sports Makers.
Our aim has always been to give everyone from the age of 16+ the opportunity to improve their health and wellbeing, to building confidence and learn a new skill by moving out of their comfort zones, and also to make new friends and have fun.
Loughborough University is one of the country’s leading sports institutions. It is highly regarded and during the Games we will be showcasing its superb sporting and training facilities.
It is therefore a unique occasion for recognising and valuing our students, staff and members of the public, helping to develop their confidence, knowledge and strengths, and thereby building an enduring legacy that will serve the community in the future.
