The Online Search Service

The Online Search Service provides access to an extensive range of databases which supplement the databases searchable via MetaLib. If you have already tried the databases on MetaLib but have so far been unsuccessful, this service may provide the results you are looking for.

Online searches are performed by library staff on behalf of academic staff and researchers. Please contact your Academic Librarian or one of the contacts listed below to make an appointment.

Features of the Online Search Service

Databases are available through Dialog which includes Dissertation Abstracts, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Abstracts and the Wilson databases - Applied Science and Technology, Business, Humanities and Social Science Abstracts.

Although the Library has access to this service on a 'pay-as-you-go' basis, it will be offered free to researchers and academic staff. However, it may be necessary to introduce quotas to contain costs depending on individual or departmental demands.

Current awareness service

Having successfully retrieved references on a topic of interest using the Online Search Service, it is possible to save the search strategy which has been used and run the search again at periodic intervals. New references can then be retrieved and sent to the interested party as part of an ongoing current awareness service. The relevance of references retrieved as part of the current awareness service are consistently monitored and the search profile can be edited and tailored to changes in the research interests or other factors. A charge may be made for this service.

Contacts

Please contact one of the following if you would like a search to be done on your behalf or if you have any queries about the online or current awareness services. Please try to book searches a reasonable time in advance to allow for availability of staff.
