Tawfiq Amarin
Jordan
MEng Electronic & Computer Systems Engineering
Tawfiq is the eldest of three children who completed his A-Levels at the age of 16. Despite the fact that there are many good Universities in Jordan, Tawfiq decided that a qualification from the UK would definitely improve his employability and, of course, his English language proficiency. He preferred the UK to the US because of the culture, traditions and history of Britain. Tawfiq describes how he chose Loughborough University:
“…I knew the course I wanted so I began researching some of the best Universities in the UK which could provide the subject of my study. Loughborough was a Top 15 University at the time (four years ago) and is now Top 10 which looks really good on my CV. I was also recommended Loughborough by an Agent in Jordan who explained that Loughborough is known as a leading UK University when it comes to Engineering teaching and facilities.
“It was a big culture shock arriving to study and live in a new country – but I have to say I picked the perfect University in Loughborough. Loughborough has a large campus so I immediately felt safe and surrounded by many people who were away from home for the first time – just like me. The British students in my accommodation were very friendly and I began socialising with them and other nationalities from day one. Also, Loughborough has amazing sports facilities so I met people through playing sports too.
“The sports facilities are not the only state-of-the-art buildings at Loughborough University – the laboratories in the Engineering/Computing departments are second to none, as is the teaching you receive. However, University is about living life as well as education and for an international student, Loughborough is a great place to be. The town itself is very friendly and you learn quickly where the post office and shops are. If you want to see city life, Nottingham and Leicester are 10 minutes away on the train. There is also an International Students Association here which is very active and I recommend that any international students should join as soon as they arrive here.
“I see Loughborough as having given me a great education and platform to start a career in a major multinational company. It has also given me many friends from all around the world. I will graduate in summer 2005 and I can honestly say I have enjoyed the best years of my life at this University. The highest recommendation that I can give to Loughborough is that my brother is about to begin applying to Universities and I have already told him to come here to study”.
