Gaukhar Massabayeva
Kazakhstan
Science and Engineering Foundation Studies (pre-BEng)
Gaukhar’s good academic results from school and from the Eurasian National University in Astana encouraged her to think about applying for one of her country’s national (Bolashak) scholarships. Her English benefited greatly from a period of language study in England with a host family and she then decided to return to the UK for her future engineering studies.
“When applying through UCAS I had to operate only with the University and Departmental rankings in the Times and Guardian Best University guides. I came to a decision that Electronics and Electrical Engineering was the course most suitable for me and Loughborough University had excellent evaluations for this department. What also caught my eye was that BAE Systems were in co-operation with Loughborough University. At an education exhibition in Astana I received helpful advice from Loughborough University. The only thing left for me at that time was to decide whether or not I would like to spend the next four years of my life studying in Loughborough University. The answer was - absolutely yes!”
“As an international student I didn’t know much about the application process when I was looking at studying at Loughborough University but I called up the admissions officers and they gave me a lot of information on how to go about applying to Loughborough as well as advice on financial matters. Also on my arrival I received a lot of help from the international office as well as my department. They explained my timetable and showed me around the campus. Since I am an international student I was able to meet new people from other countries as well as my own. This made me feel welcome at Loughborough University. At the annual International Day in May I was amazed at the number of different countries represented at the various stalls and cultural displays in the Students Union. Everyone is so willing to share their culture!”
“I would definitely recommend Loughborough University to my peers who plan to study in the UK. By studying here I have been able to gain a more global perspective on issues which affect our economy. I have also worked part-time as a carer for elderly people which has given me a deeper understanding of British people and their culture. I myself have experienced the “Loughborough Experience” which I will always cherish and remember as some of the best years of my life. “
