Arts Degree Show to showcase work of emerging artists

Students from the School of the Arts, English and Drama are set to exhibit a wide range of work at the 2018 Arts Degree Show, which opens to the public on 9 June.

Art graduates from Loughborough have a strong reputation for building careers in a range of occupations, with many enterprising students going on to contribute to the UK’s outstanding role within the arts and creative industries.

The Show, which will run until 17 June, is an opportunity for potential employers, friends, family, industry and members of the public to view their work.

It features an eclectic range of paintings and illustrations, textile design, fashion garments, sculpture, photographs, installations, short films, animations, graphic design and video game demonstrations.

Notable works in the exhibition include paintings by Benji Thomas, who made it to the semi-finals of Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year in July 2017.

Also on display will be eye-catching toilet roll, underwear and other items designed by Emily Clode and Dan Herrick as part of a campaign to encourage people to self-check for breast and testicular cancer.

Photographer Dale Robert Tyers will be exhibiting a series of images that were motivated by personal experiences of growing up and becoming a father, and Hannah Stout will tell her diabetes story through her installation piece that aims to raise awareness of the day-to-day reality for those living with the condition.

This year’s students have amassed a string of awards. The show features a piece on ‘realization’ by installation and performance artist Jordan Page, the 2017/18 winner of the Artists’ Collecting Society Materials Prize.

Other exhibiting artists with impressive accolades include Kathryn Beck, who received a commendation in the Bradford Textile Society awards in 2018 and 2016, and integrated digital practice textiles artist Lucy Dennis, who secured first prize in the Cotton USA competition in June 2017.

Professor Alison Yarrington, Dean of the School of the Arts, English and Drama, commented:  “Our Arts Degree Show 2018 is imaginative, adventurous and thought-provoking, bringing the individual and unique talents of our final-year students into an inspiring collective event.

“Challenging convention and understanding the benefits of taking risks, many of these enterprising new artists and designers will go on from Loughborough to contribute to the UK’s leading role in the creative industries globally.”

The Arts Degree Show is open to the public from 9-17 June, every day from 10am-5pm at the Edward Barnsley Building, Loughborough University.

Dean of Loughborough Design SchoolProfessor Richard Bibb, said: “Once again our students have produced an exciting and diverse range of novel and innovative projects addressing a wide variety of users and needs.

“I am sure that everyone who visits will be impressed by the quality of the work on show and the dedication and enthusiasm of our students.”
