Three Loughborough University basketballers win third BBL title

Recent MSc graduate Tyler Bernardini captained the side, playing alongside MSc Marketing student Keifer Douse and MSc International Management student Eric Robertson. The Riders are the first BBL team to win three consecutive trophy titles since 2004.

With an all-important win over DBL Sharks Sheffield, five Riders players hit double figures, bringing the score-line to a tight 90-85 and consolidating the Riders’ position at the top of the BBL table.

Current students Eric and Kiefer are also eligible also play for Loughborough Student Riders in BUCS and were crowned 2018 BUCS Champions last month.

In a trilogy of success, the Loughborough Student Riders were also recently named NBL Division One League Champions. The team of students were the youngest roster in the league, and lost just four games in the regular season, beating professional and semi-professional opposition.

The University’s SBE has a strong history with the Leicester Riders, co-sponsoring the team.

Professor Jim Saker, who spearheaded the Rider’s sponsorship, commented:

“The School of Business and Economics actively supports students who wish to pursue their sports careers while obtaining a top class education. We have been delighted by the contribution the elite athletes make in class and the enthusiasm that they generate as they work with their fellow students.

“In addition to players from the Leicester Riders, we work with the Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey team and have supported Loughborough Lightning netballer Peace Proscovia.”
