Loughborough academic appointed as Fellow of new Political Literacy Oversight Group
Sarah Mills, Senior Lecturer in Human Geography in the School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences, has been appointed a Fellow of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Democratic Participation’s new Political Literacy Oversight Group.
The Group will explore new attempts to improve citizenship education and political literacy in the UK. As one of eight Fellows, Dr Mills will work alongside other researchers, charity directors and two former Education Secretaries –Lord Blunkett and Nicky Morgan MP.
This APPG invitation follows her recent written evidence to the House of Commons on the National Citizen Service Bill, drawing on her ESRC-funded research on the National Citizen Service (NCS) and youth citizenship.
Discussing the group, she commented: “This is a great opportunity to bring together expertise in the area of citizenship education and impact on young people’s lives.
“The group is non-partisan and will be exploring curricular and extra-curricular interventions, teacher engagement, as well as extending the research base in this field.”
Dr Sarah Mills’ research focuses on youth citizenship, informal education and volunteering. She currently holds a prestigious ESRC Future Research Leader award and is Elected Chair of the Royal Geographical Society’s Research Group on ‘Geographies of Children, Youth and Families’.
