Institute of Advanced Studies first lecture announced

The newly launched Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) is delighted to announce its first lecture, taking place on 9 June.

Organised by Professor Darren Smith, the lecture falls under the theme of Migration and will be delivered by Professor Phillip Rees.

Policy, media and public discourses in the UK and beyond are influenced by the ways in which immigration is measured, analysed, and reported.

The public lecture will provide a review of party manifestos and Think Tank policy advice on immigration, reflecting on what a good immigration policy for the UK should look like post-Brexit.

It will also present a plan for improving international migration statistics in the UK and provide some forecasts of future international migration.

Professor Phillip Rees is a British population geographer and demographer. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Population Geography at the University of Leeds. In 1996, he was awarded the Gill Memorial Award from the Royal Geographical Society and in 1998 was made a fellow of the British Academy.

He was appointed as a Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2004, and in 2009 was awarded the Victoria Medal from the Royal Geographical Society.

The free lecture will take place in the Stewart Mason Building (SMB 0.17) where drinks and light refreshments will be available. Those wishing to attend must register here.
