Design students sweep international packaging competition
The Student Packaging Design Awards were introduced in 1964 to recognise and support the next generation of young professional designers working in packaging design. In the past, the awards have led directly to a number of employment opportunities for successful entrants.
The awards were presented at a ceremony in London on 28 June, where Loughborough students picked up an impressive five gold awards, five silver and six bronze, with three more highly commended. Additional sponsor prizes were also awarded.
Daniel Clarke was awarded gold in the ‘Air Freshener Bottle’ category for ‘Air Care’, which was also given the Logoplaste Award for the best entry.
Millicent Ashton picked up a gold award and the Coca-Cola Award for the ‘Coca-Cola - Packaging as a Bridge to Digitised Brand Experience’ category.
Also awarded gold, and receiving the MPMA 2nd prize, was Max Walker for ‘Bear Vodka’ in the category for ‘A New Luxury Vodka Pack’.

Dr George Torrens, Senior Lecturer and module leader for Industrial Design Studies 1 and competition submission organiser, said: “Design School students won over 40% of the awards this year, which is an impressive feat.
“What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that the majority of winners are in their first year of study and are already succeeding in an international design competition.
“This year, students submitted a digital presentation for the first round and then had to produce a physical model in less than two weeks after they were shortlisted. They did exceedingly well to produce award-winning models, with advice from academic staff and technical tutors.
“Myself and colleagues Karl Hurn and Dr Rhoda Trimingham promote the competition as a way of the students gaining external credit for their good work.”
All students who received highly commended through to gold awards are eligible to enter the WorldStar competition later in the year.
