Design School students win big at Starpack competition

Loughborough Design School students have received 50 awards overall in the The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) Starpack competition.

A total of 73 Design School students entered 5 of the 7 competition briefs making up over a third of the total entries this year. From the 73 Loughborough entries, 50 students achieved an award from the IOM3.

Four students won silver awards, 13 received bronze and 32 were commended, with Nicholas Johnson winning Gold in Brief E entitled Barbeque in the sun.

Sponsored by Graphic Packaging International, Brief E challenged applicants to develop innovative concepts for a fun style carton to hold both food and drink which could incorporate three or more items. Winning gold for his design, The Graze & Griddle Co., Nick received £500 and a work experience placement with accommodation for one week.

Dr George Torrens, module leader, said: “Myself and Karl Hurn, co-supervisor on the module, are delighted with the results. The first year students entering this competition have only been with us just over a Semester and yet they achieved such results against second year and finalist students from other institutions.

“The module provides intensive introduction to the theory of social psychology associated with product branding, with a grounding given in presentation techniques, computer aided design as well as physical sketch modelling. This has enabled the new students to show their talent at a national level. Nick Johnson, our Gold winner, had completed the module two years ago.”

The Student Awards Presentations for Gold, Silver and Bronze Stars will take place at the head office of IOM3 on 29 June.
