Formula Student Race Team perform well in international events

The University’s Formula Student Race Team, have successfully completed all elements of this summer’s planned competitions.

Throughout the events, the team achieved some outstanding results, coming in 13th place in the UK event (9-12 July), 12th place in the German event (29 July-2 August) and 7th place in the Czech Republic (2 – 6 September).

Formula Student is a racing car design and build competition for engineering students. The competition is run and managed by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and those involved contribute through project work during their time at university.

The aim of the competition is to design and build a small racing car to a given specification, with a cost structure based on a production run of 1,000 vehicles.

This year’s car utilised a space frame chassis design and was powered by a CBR600RR engine. Students designed many innovative solutions to enable a lightweight vehicle, which retains reliability in all vehicle systems.

With the season now at an end, designs are currently underway for next year’s vehicle, which will incorporate a three cylinder turbo charged engine at the heart of a hybrid carbon fibre/steel chassis design.
