Loughborough graduate shortlisted for Football Book of the Year

Loughborough University graduate Seth Burkett has been shortlisted for Football Book of the Year at the Cross British Sports Book Awards, with the winner set to be announced on Wednesday 3rd June.

Burkett’s book titled ‘The Boy in Brazil’ gives an insightful account into his time living and playing football in the South American country. At just 18 years of age, Stamford born Burkett spent a year playing in Brazil, the only English professional to do so.

Described as a charming first-hand account of Brazilian football, Burkett’s book takes a bittersweet look into ‘the beautiful game’ and the cultural concerns of the 2014 World Cup’s vibrant hosts.

Of his time in Brazil, Burkett, who graduated from Loughborough last year with a Masters in English, said:

“It was an incredible experience that was the making of the person I am today. It taught me so much about life – the thing that I will always take away from it is how happy you can be even when you don’t have anything.”

The Boy in Brazil goes up against ‘The Second Half’ by Roy Keane and ‘Bobby Moore: The Man in Full’ amongst others at the awards ceremony at Lord’s Cricket Ground next Wednesday.
