Professor Barbara Bagilhole

It is with great sadness that the Department of Social Sciences announces the death of Barbara Bagilhole, Emeritus Professor of Social Policy and Equal Opportunities, on 16 June 2015.

Barbara joined the department in the early 1990s and her research made significant contributions both nationally and internationally in the fields of social policy and equal opportunity and diversity. Her extensive and varied research career, which was path-breaking in so many ways and always animated by her strong feminist commitment, included studies on women in science and engineering, women in higher education and women priests. She broke new ground with her research into women in non-traditional, male-dominated work and in particular her cross-disciplinary research into women in the construction industry with colleagues at Loughborough.

She also made an important contribution to our knowledge of women's disadvantaged position in higher education and was an active participant in feminist academic networks across Europe and beyond. She was an invited member of the World Institute for Engineering and Technology Education (WIETE) in recognition of a significant contribution to engineering and technology education and she was also a member of the Professional European Association of Women’s and Gender Studies.

Barbara will be greatly missed by her colleagues in the department and everyone who knew her.
