Design School academic shortlisted for international design award

Street furniture designed by Dr Mark Evans, has been selected as a finalist entry in the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA).

Produced as part of an EPSRC funded project to explore the creative product opportunities inspired by 3D concrete printing, Dr Evans’ public seating concept proposes a truck-mounted, on-site, on-demand building process to help reduce “product miles”. Its environmental impact is further reduced by adding fly ash waste from coal fired power stations to 50% of the concrete mix.

Dr Evans, a Reader in Industrial Design, comments: “Having become accustomed to the academic peer review process, I was absolutely delighted to have my work selected by a jury of leading professional designers.”

Judging of the finalist designs is currently taking place at the Henry Ford Museum in the USA and winners will be presented with their awards in Seattle on August 22.
