Four students receive funds for their travels

Four students will benefit from travelling scholarships that will see them travel as far afield as the USA, Canada, Jerusalem, Sarajevo and Sri Lanka.

First year SSEHS student Laura Wintour and Art Foundation student Robyn Hastings have both received the Ede and Ravenscroft Prize which is awarded annually to non-finalist undergraduate students.

Postgraduates Emily Hofstetter (Social Sciences) and Elena Simone (Chemical Engineering) are recipients of the John Guest Phillips Memorial Travelling Scholarship, set up to provide financial support for postgraduate research students.

Each student will receive £500 to support research and educational trips overseas.

Laura Wintour and Robyn Hastings were selected from 23 applications to the Ede and Ravenscroft Prize.

Laura will travel to Sri Lanka next summer to take part in a psychology programme run by Kings College London. During a five-week stay in Sri Lanka she will shadow clinical psychologists in the acute, learning disability and occupational therapy units of a psychiatric hospital, as well as volunteering at a residential centre providing long-term care for approximately 525 women suffering with mental illness.

Robyn is using her prize to fund trips to Jerusalem, Sarajevo, Berlin and Belfast to document the use of graffiti art to express political messages in communities that have experienced conflict and dissent.

Emily Hofstetter and Elena Simone were selected from 38 applications to the John Guest Phillips Memorial Travelling Scholarship.

For Emily, the prize will help fund a trip to Canada to start an original project looking at personal interactions between the country’s MPs and their constituents. During her stay she will recruit and train MPs’ administrative staff to assist in her data collection.

Elena plans to travel to the USA to work and interact with leading particle technology and industrial pharmacy researchers at Purdue University.

Chair of the Travel Prizes Panel Mike Smith said:

“We were pleased there were so many applications from students planning to travel to enhance their studies and gain experience, and that the applications were for such varied and interesting projects away from the University.”

A range of prizes are available to students to support extra-curricular activities and travel. Details of the prizes students can apply for directly are available on the academic registry web pages.
