Are you sitting too long at work?

A new study has set out to understand the effect of desk jobs on our health and is looking for office workers to take part.

Researchers in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS) are running the SHIFT study, which is exploring how many hours a day we spend sitting, and what can be done about it.

Lead researcher Veronica Varelo-Mato is calling on colleagues to sign up to the study.

Participants will be asked to make a short 20-minute lab visit where measurements, including body composition, waist circumference and blood pressure will be taken, as well as a simple finger prick test. Volunteers will be required to wear two physical activity monitors over seven days, and continue with their usual day-to-day routine.

All participants will receive feedback on their measurements taken, and will be invited to take part in further phases of the study designed to reduce sedentary behaviour in the workplace (though this is not compulsory).

The SHIFT study is also recruiting participants from a wide range of driving occupations including bus, taxi and lorry drivers.

If you, or anyone you know, would like to take part please contact Veronica on 01509 226452 or email V.Varela-Mato@lboro.ac.uk
