School of the Arts student wins New Designers award

Laura Melhuish-Sprague

School of the Arts student, Laura Melhuish-Sprague has been awarded one of the prestigious prizes at the New Designers Show 2014.

New Designers is the UK’s most important graduate design exhibition.  The show features everything from textiles and jewellery to product design and illustration.  Held in London annually, it showcases the work of more than 3,000 newly-graduated designers and brings them together with UK and international companies looking for design talent.

Every year a series of industry supported awards are presented to the most innovative graduates.  The awards form a very important part of the show and are proven to have a direct and personal impact on the career of winners.  Laura won the award sponsored by leading fabrics and wallcoverings company, Harlequin. She was chosen for her woven warp and digital print designs.  On her designs the judges commented: “Innovative mix of print and weave, beautiful colour and inspirational drawing resulting in a very appealing collection.”

Laura’s prizes include £1,000 and a two week work placement.

A BA Hons Textiles: Innovation and Design student, Laura is originally from Exeter.  She is one of a total of 29 students from the course who have exhibited at New Designers.

The University is hoping for further success when the spotlight falls on the work of 16 students from the Design School who are also at the show.
