Research Excellence Framework: results released this week

The outcome of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) will be published this week.

The REF is the system through which the quality of research in all subject areas in UK universities is assessed. One of the primary aims of the REF is to inform the selective allocation of funds for research distributed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

We will receive the REF results for Loughborough tomorrow (Tuesday 16 December) and the outcome for all other universities will be available on Wednesday (17 December). The publication of the results is embargoed until Thursday 18 December.

We have a number of meetings arranged to allow us to analyse the data as we receive them and we have a detailed plan in place for disseminating the results.

Deans will inform staff in their Schools of relevant outcomes on 16th and 17th December, and the Vice Chancellor will send an email to all staff on Thursday 18th.

We have also set up a dedicated website as a central point of information for the REF. This provides the publication timetable and the assessment criteria, and will also include details of Loughborough’s performance when they are published.
