Determining the Dates of the Academic Year and Semesters within the Academic Year

(Version effective from 5 July 2012)

  1. There shall be two semesters each of at least fifteen weeks. Semesters shall be known as Semester One and Semester Two.
  2. There shall be three terms. Terms shall be known as the Autumn Term, Spring Term and Summer Term.
  3. Semester One shall begin on the first Monday of the Academic Year. Semester Two shall commence immediately after the end of Semester One.
  4. The Autumn Term shall commence on the first Monday of Semester One and shall provide eleven weeks prior to the Christmas vacation. It will end on the last teaching day before the Christmas vacation; the Spring Term shall commence on the first teaching day after the Christmas Vacation and end on the last teaching day before the Easter Vacation; the Summer Term shall commence on the first teaching day after the Easter Vacation and end on the final day of University Examinations.
  5. Semesters and Terms shall commence on a Monday and end on a Friday.
  6. The last teaching day before the Christmas vacation shall be the penultimate Friday before Christmas Day.
  7. Senate shall prescribe the dates of the Academic Year and the dates of the Semesters and Terms within the Academic Year. These will be published by the Academic Registrar in well in advance of the academic year concerned for scheduled classes.
