Loughborough triathletes selected for Glasgow 2014
Seven triathletes with Loughborough connections will represent three different nations at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
London 2012 Olympians Lucy Hall and Vicky Holland have been selected by England.
Lucy is a current Sports Scholar and a student at Loughborough College. Vicky is a graduate of the University who studied Human Biology.
Speaking about the team announcement Vicky Holland said:
“I’m delighted to be selected to represent Team England at my first Commonwealth Games. I’m excited to race in a home nation at another major championships and hope to experience something close to the phenomenal level of support that we received at the London Olympics.”
Lucy Hall added:
“I’ve raced at Strathclyde Park before. It’s a familiar venue for me, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it looks with 40,000 spectators. If the atmosphere is anything like it was in London then it’s going to be amazing! I’m really proud to be part of it.”
Joining them in the England squad is Aaron Harris, who trains at Loughborough as part of the World Class Lottery funded squad coached by Rick Velati.
Current University student Alex Matchett, Loughborough based Lottery funded triathlete Morgan Davies, and graduate Carol Bridge will all represent Wales in the team event.
Finally current University student Matthew Wright will be representing Barbados. Matt, who is studying Sports Science with Management, said:
“When I arrived in Loughborough in 2010 my coach Gavin Smith and I agreed that Glasgow 2014 would be on my radar. This will be my first major Games I’ve competed in and was over the moon when I found out I had been selected.”
The triathlon events will take place in and around the Strathclyde Country Park on the outskirts of Glasgow on 24 and 26 July.
