The Social Mercenary

Jack Fellows

Banking Finance and Management, 2018

Jack’s placement year was a little out of the ordinary. He joined international development programme, ICS Challenges Worldwide, as a volunteer in Ghana (2016-17).

Inspired by the talented young Ghanaians he met and worked with, Jack decided to help them sell their beautiful products worldwide.

The Social Mercenary currently sells backpacks created in gorgeous Ghanaian fabrics, and is planning to expand its product range to include caps and T-shirts.

Each item is crafted by Ghanaian craftsmen and women, and profits are reinvested into their workshops and training.

Jack also plans to buy a peak finisher which will accelerate cap production – and will be a first in Ghana.

As well as working with individual artisans, Jack has partnered Ethical Apparel Africa to ensure that TSM’s products are not only something unusual and special, but – more importantly – ethically produced.

I’ve always been a bit of an entrepreneur and with this venture I’ve found that anything’s possible. Fashion was a field I never considered, but I’m loving it. It’s fantastic to be learning every day - and the people I’ve met and worked with along the way have made it something really special.
