Intelligent Energy is a globally scalable business creating bespoke power systems for OEMs and their global mass markets.
Its fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen from the air to deliver clean power for a diverse range of applications across multiple sectors. The origins of this rapidly growing company can be traced back to ground-breaking transport and chemistry research conducted at Loughborough in the late 1980s.
Intelligent Energy recently completed a fund-raising round of approximately £7 million from existing and new institutional shareholders.
The company employs 180 people and has offices in the US, London, Japan and India. It continues to engage in Collaborative Research with the University and its global headquarters are on our Science and Enterprise Park.

- Intelligent Energy technology underpins the Fuel Cell Black Cabs which debuted on the streets of London in March 2011 and the Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter which has European Whole Vehicle Type Approval - a world first
- The company has formed a joint venture to commercialise fuel cell combined heat and power systems with Scottish & Southern Energy plc
- Intelligent Energy has supplied Airbus with a multi-functional fuel cell auxiliary power unit (APU) aimed at on-board power and other loads in future commercial airliners
