Campbell Scientific of Shepshed, Leicestershire, which makes meteorological equipment, sensors and data loggers, was looking to create a research and development programme which would lead the way in its field.
The company teamed up with members of the University’s Optical Engineering Research Group, who were conducting world-class research into optoelectronics.
Under a Knowledge Transfer Partnership, Campbell developed a Present Weather Sensor designed to measure and classify rain and visibility.

Impact
- Delivery of a weather sensor which has since been sold globally to a range of markets
- Development of a strong, ongoing collaboration between the university and the company including further KTP projects resulting in the Ceilometer - a cloud base recorder to measure the height of cloud layers - and the Cloud Classifier System, which exploits the latest developments in infrared technology and image processing
