Innovative mathematical and statistical modelling supports the development life-saving treatments
- BAST Inc Ltd
BAST was founded in 1991 by Joachim Grevel in Houston, Texas, and was the first commercial consultancy to offer population-style data analysis to the pharmaceutical industry. In 2010, the company relocated to the UK, establishing its headquarters on LUSEP in 2012.
The company provides data analytical services to pharmaceutical companies and CROs, and offers optimal clinical study designs as well as decision analysis by simulation.
For example, BAST models the potential success of new medicines so that accurate decisions can be made with regards further development before time, resource and funding are invested.
The application of pharmacometric principles, PKPD modelling and simulation adds significant value to client projects, guiding their decisions with quantitative evidence – making them better able to gauge the risk and utility of their innovations. The designs of experiments and clinical studies are optimised, and the investment risk throughout a development portfolio is quantified.
BAST’s client base predominantly comprises small, medium and large pharmaceutical companies as well as venture capital firms in the fields of oncology, neuropharmacology and diagnostics.
A third of the eight-strong BAST team are Loughborough graduates, and the company partners with LUSEP-hosted HPC Midlands – the region’s most advanced supercomputer for research and industry.
Joachim Grevel says of being based on LUSEP: “The high quality infrastructure and access to excellent local talent has exceeded our expectations.”
