Feeding difficulties in children are common and often a natural part of human development, but they can have lasting detrimental effects.

Specialist children's feeding researchers at Loughborough University Centre for Research into Eating Disorders (LUCRED) have developed a free app and website to support caregivers concerned about their children’s eating behaviours.

The unique app and website help caregivers to understand why their child is “fussy” and what they can do to improve mealtimes – and establish lifelong healthy eating habits.

Based on 25 years’ research, the app explains the science behind the behaviour, allows caregivers to assess and monitor their own and the child's feeding behaviour, and provides strategies to address fussiness in a positive way.

The iPhone version of the app was launched in May 2013 and has already had a significant impact, receiving five-star ratings from users and recommendations from a variety of organisations including the Buckinghamshire Family Information Service, Mumsnet, and the NHS.

Impact

  • There have been over 100 downloads of The Top 10 Tips for Healthy, Happy Mealtimes.
  • Traffic on the website has already been busy – it is currently being disseminated by the NHS and has featured on Tesco Living website.
  • The project’s active and successful social media campaign via Twitter has more than 4,000 followers who regularly contact the team and have participated in well-received live Q&A seminars.
  • The Android app is due to launch this Spring.
