Lamplight Press – a unique University publishing house

Loughborough academic
Melanie Ramdarshan Bold, English and Drama

Launched in July 2013, Lamplight Press is an independent not-for-profit student-led publishing house which produces general trade and academic books. It’s based on Ooligan Press, a thriving student venture from Portland State University in the US, founded in 2001.

An innovative University-based enterprise – unique to the UK – Lamplight is a teaching press, providing Loughborough’s Publishing and English undergraduates with invaluable publishing skills which will serve them well when seeking employment in this highly competitive industry.

Students from other disciplines also contribute to the venture, honing their talents in creative writing as well as graphic and web design. As the press expands, the range of opportunities for students from across campus to gain valuable skills and experience will grow.

To date, Lamplight has published The Student Wordsmith’s fast-selling collection of musings on academic life – You is for University. A second edition of the book is scheduled for this June.

Planned publications for the coming year include an anthology of creative pieces submitted by writers across the region – Transitions and Change – and The Maya: A Living Culture in the 21st Century – a collection of artworks and articles exploring aspects of contemporary Mayan life, edited by human biologist Ines Varela Silva.

The income generated by these titles will make Lamplight sustainable, and negotiations are already underway to publish regular anthologies of Creative Writing students’ work – expanding the press’s portfolio and regular income.

As well as supporting the learning of Loughborough students, Lamplight will eventually form partnerships with local schools and libraries to support literacy initiatives, including book giveaways and literary festivals.

Writers across the region will also benefit. Lamplight will foster and develop relationships with writing and creative communities across the East Midlands by giving writers a platform from which to connect with a national audience, as well as the chance to publicise their creative work.

  • Lamplight is the only University-based student-led teaching press in the UK – providing students with invaluable experience of the publishing industry whilst developing a range of transferable skills
  • The press’s first book is selling well – a second edition is due for release this summer – and two further titles are scheduled for publication later this year
  • Planned projects with external organisations will support both literacy and literary initiatives
