Biography

Nicolette (Lettie) Bishop completed her first degree in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Birmingham in 1997 for which she was awarded the C.T.M Davies Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Following this, Lettie accepted a PhD Scholarship to work with Professor Mike Gleeson investigating nutritional influences on the immune response to exercise. On completion of her PhD in June 2000, Lettie joined Loughborough University as a Research Associate with the Human Muscle Metabolism Research Group. In September 2000, Lettie became a Lecturer in Exercise Physiology and in 2007 was appointed to her current position in the School as a Senior Lecturer.

Research and Teaching Interests

Lettie’s research interests lie in the effect that exercise has on immune function and inflammation in healthy individuals and in those with chronic conditions. Most recently she has been investigating the relationships between an active lifestyle and inflammatory mediators on markers of chronic inflammation and immune function in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease with colleagues at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS trust; their work in this area was highly commended at the Da Vinci Health Technology awards in March 2010. Lettie is also investigating the effects of acute exercise and training on immunoendocrine function, markers of inflammation and respiratory infection incidence in elite and recreational athletes with spinal cord injuries in collaboration with Dr Vicky Tolfrey, Director of the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport at Loughborough University. Lettie is also interested in nutritional influences on immune responses to exercise. Lettie’s research is a mixture of both fundamental and applied research and involves a multidisciplinary approach encompassing exercise physiology, biochemistry, immunology and nutrition.

Lettie teaches in this area of exercise and immunology on the MSc Exercise Physiology and MSc Sport and Exercise Nutrition programmes and teaches in the area of exercise physiology on the undergraduate programme.
