Loughborough University Eating Behaviour Research Laboratory

Welcome to the Eating Behaviour Research Laboratory webpage. The laboratory is designed for the study of human appetite, individual differences in eating behaviour and factors associated with the development and maintenance of eating disorders.

Facilities

The laboratory consists of a fitted kitchen, individual testing booths and a social eating space. It contains food storage, refrigeration and cooking facilities and equipment for the preparation, weighing and serving of foods. Weighing scales and a stadiometer permit the accurate measurement of weight and height in order that body mass index (BMI) can be calculated. The individual testing cubicles are designed to allow privacy during eating episodes and completion of questionnaires. One of these cubicles is equipped with a PC and E-Prime software for the administration of cognitive tests and computerised questionnaires. In addition, the laboratory has eye-tracking technology. Other equipment includes a wide variety of psychometric measures to assess mood state, somatic sensations, personality factors, stress, depression, and individual differences in eating behaviour. These extensive facilities enable examination of a variety of factors that can influence eating behaviour and food choice. In addition to strictly controlled laboratory-based studies, we also conduct research in the field and with a variety of clinical and non-clinical populations.

Children’s Eating Behaviour Laboratory

The children’s eating behaviour laboratory contains a child-friendly eating area, a play area complete with an array of toys, and a screened-off space for parents to complete questionnaires. The lab is set up with a series of camcorders which enable children’s eating behaviours and play activities to be monitored unobtrusively. The children’s lab contains weighing scales and a stadiometer, in order to take accurate measurements of children’s height and weight when they visit the lab.  The lab is based near to a research kitchen to allow for food preparation.

The children’s eating behaviour laboratory is used for a range of studies and we always need parents and children to come in and take part.  If you and your child would be interested in taking part in future studies, please contact Dr. Emma Haycraft or Dr. Claire Farrow for further information:
