What does research training involve?
Your PhD study aims to provide a sound foundation for future research and career opportunities. You may be required to attend postgraduate Research Methods lectures and lab classes (2-4 hours per week) as part of your research training and you will also be encorouged to attend appropriate conferences and to submit poster and oral presentations.
Students initially register for the MPhil and, subject to satisfactory performance, progress to PhD study. Progress is discussed and asssessed at an annual review meeting. At the end of your studies you will be required to submit a written thesis and attend a viva-voce examination.
MPhil: 2 years full-time; 3 years part-time
PhD: 3 years full-time; 5 years part-time.
School support and training for research students
Full-time research students are provided with:
- A supervisor who provides academic and personal support
- Desk and workstation
- An allowance for photocopying and inter-library loans
- Students can request funding for conference travel from their supervisors if appropriate, or can apply for external funding where available.
- Research training that includes research seminars and taught modules in advanced research methods
- Representatives for both home and international students in the School’s Committee structure
- Opportunities to assist with tutorials or laboratory practicals for undergraduate students
Entry Qualification
Applicants are normally required to have at least a 2:1 degree at undergraduate level. Having a Masters degree is advantagous in terms of experience and research training.
