Paul Michael Brannagan
After completing his Sports Studies degree at Southampton Solent University, Paul enrolled on the MSc Sociology of Sport course at Loughborough before progressing onto the PhD. Paul is primarily interested in the socio-political value and impact of both first- and second-order Sport Mega Events (SMEs). Through this, Paul has published several works on the use of sports events in the Middle East, with a specific focus on Qatar’s acquisition of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Working alongside numerous Qatari authorities, the project looks to trace the soft power intentions and soft disempowerment consequences of Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and overall engagement with global sporting forms.
