Public Lecture: Screen-time and unhealthy eating in childhood: how we can promote healthy behaviours

Presented By Presented by Dr Natalie Pearson, Research Associate in Physical Activity and Public Health, Loughborough University

About this event

Dr Natalie Pearson, Research Associate in Physical Activity and Public Health at Loughborough University, will present an NCSEM public lecture this May.

Excessive screen-time (use of TVs, computers, tablets) and unhealthy eating are increasingly common behaviours in children and adolescents. These behaviours often co-occur and cluster in young people (for example high screen users are also likely to have unhealthy eating behaviours) and can pose a significant health risk.

Effective ways to reduce these behaviours will be explored. Recent changes in the way young people use screens, and how we can promote more constructive use of screens, will also be discussed.

Dr Natalie Pearson graduated from Loughborough University’s Sport and Exercise Science programme in 2004, and went on to obtain a masters (2005) and doctoral degree (2010) at Loughborough (with time spent at Deakin University, Australia) in the area of physical activity and eating behaviours with a focus on child and parent behaviours.

Since 2010 Dr Pearson has worked as a Research Fellow at Deakin University (2010-2011), and was appointed a Research Associate at Loughborough University in 2011 with a focus on the relationship between the family environment and children’s and adolescent’s eating behaviours, sedentary behaviour and physical activity, and how these health behaviours co-exist, with a focus on informing behaviour change and intervention design.
