I studied Economics and then Social and Political Sciences at Cambridge University. After graduating in 1988 I started a PhD thesis on critical theory and cinema. I received my PhD in 1993. This was also at Cambridge and was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. Between 1991 and 1993 I was a research fellow at the Institute for Literary and Communication Sciences at Siegen University in Germany. I then got a job as a lecturer in Communication, Culture and Media at Coventry University, becoming a senior lecturer in 1996 and Head of Subject in 1998. I moved to Loughborough in January 2000. As well as teaching and research, I have advised local and regional governments in the UK, Italy, Greece and Germany, helping public institutions to work out the social and political implications of rapid developments in information and communication technologies.
In my spare time I follow the fortunes of Newcastle United, my home-town team. I also play a bit and am noted for being hard and unfair. This is due to a singular lack of talent rather than any malicious intent.
