Before I joined the faculty at Loughborough University I taught at the Universities of Berlin, Weimar, Wuppertal, Zürich and Essen. Research

My research interests include the cultural history of the 19th and 20th century, especially the Weimar Republic, furthermore history and ideas of Modernism and the Bauhaus. This work was published in 2001 as “The Gendered World of the Bauhaus. The Politics of Power at the Weimar Republic's Premier Art Institute, 1919-1932”.

I also edited a collection of essays on the philosopher Vilém Flusser. Another book I edited, together with my colleague Magdalena Droste, is on “Bauhaus-Modernism and its Myths”. This book resulted from a three-day international conference we held at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at the University of Bielefeld.

In addition I am also interested in the cultural history of East and West Germany between 1960 and 1990. I am currently working on a new project focussing on GDR photography where I research resistance, resignation and romance in the works of female photographers.
