Profile
David Buckingham is a leading researcher on children’s and young people’s interactions with electronic media, and on media literacy education. He joined the department in January 2012, and was previously a Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, London University, where he founded and directed the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media. He has also been a Visiting Professor at universities in Norway, Italy, the United States, Hong Kong, Australia and South Africa.
David is the author, co-author or editor of 26 books, and more than 200 articles and book chapters; and his work has been translated into 15 languages. He has taught and addressed conferences in more than 30 countries around the world, and his work has been disseminated in a wide range of print and broadcast media, nationally and internationally. He is a nominated academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, and a member of the Peer Review Colleges of both ESRC and AHRC.
Research
David has directed more than 25 externally-funded research projects, supported by bodies such as the Economic and Social Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the European Commission, the Broadcasting Standards Commission, the Arts Council of England and the Gulbenkian, Spencer, MacArthur and Nuffield Foundations. He has been a consultant for bodies such as UNESCO, the United Nations, Ofcom, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, and the Institute for Public Policy Research. In 2008-9 he was engaged by two UK government departments to conduct an independent assessment of the impact of the commercial world on children’s wellbeing.
Teaching
David is currently teaching an undergraduate module on ‘Youth Culture and Media’, and contributing to modules on ‘Communication and Cultural Theory’ and ‘Constructing Meaning’. He also supervises PhD students (seven currently registered). He has supervised 20 doctoral students to successful completion, and been external examiner for more than 25 PhD theses around the world.
