My research area is social and political thought broadly understood and my writing engages with a whole range of theorists from Hobbes to Luhmann via Simmel, Karl Löwith and Jürgen Habermas. I am particularly interested in the relationships between natural law and social theory, nationalism and cosmopolitanism, the problem of universalism in modern normativity.

My current research programme centres on the idea of Philosophical Sociology, which seeks to investigate the relationships between explicit conceptions of the social and implicit ideas of human nature in the social sciences. I contend that most contemporary normative are ultimately dependent on the ideas of the human that are mobilsed in social and political life. I am currently finishing a book on this project that will look at the ways both contemporary sociologists (e.g Margaret Archer, Talcott Parsons, Luc Boltanski) and philosophers (Hannah Arendt, Charles Taylor, Hans Joas) construe their arguments on the key anthropological features that make us human. This book is under contract with Cambridge University Press. I have also blogged on this project for The Sociological Imagination and The Sociological Review.

I am the author of four books twenty or so articles and book chapters, a coupe of which has been translated into Italian and Portuguese. I have given over 70 invited presentations, lectures or graduate courses in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain and the UK. I have been awarded a Fellowship by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and sit in Editorial Board for Sociology and the international boards of British Journal of Sociology and European Journal of Social Theory.

A paperback edition of my The Natural Law Foundations of Modern Social Theory (CUP) is now available. See here.
